A visual refresh of our UI foundations is coming

Hi partners, really appreciate the questions!

Our team will be sharing multiple updates (some big ones!) to the Atlassian Design System files published on Figma Community over the coming weeks and months.

This will include improvements to library structure, individual components, as well as the changes to iconography, typography, and colour.

We know there’s been a long gap since our last update. We’ve been hard at work on the visual refresh, moving to design tokens, and also adapting to changes to Figma itself. These improvements will let us roll out improvements to the Atlassian Design System faster — expect to see more frequent, more iterative updates in the future!

We don’t have anything to share about DC products or updating AUI right now. Our DC products, and recent versions of AUI, also use parts of the Atlassian Design System including colour tokens, so we’ll be exploring your scenario. Thanks for asking about it!

There will be both design token and component changes involved.

The changes for typography and color are token-based, while for iconography we are changing the iconcomponent significantly and will be sharing more details soon. We’re also tweaking the look of some components directly as part of the visual refresh.

If your app is deployed to both Cloud and DC, token changes should be automatically enabled alongside each parent product — that’s one of the benefits of tokens, after all!

For some packages, it will be a version upgrade requiring migration. We’ll share guidance and tooling for automating migrations as much as possible.

Some of these changes are already shipped in code, which you can see in the npm packages (but behind feature flags).

We’ll be sharing guidance and documentation for each foundation over the coming months, to help everyone adopt/migrate.

It’s worth highlighting that we’ll keep making tweaks along the way, including based on feedback, so expect continuing iterations!

Appreciate the feedback, we’ll take this into account when looking at lozenges. And thanks for flagging the alignment issue, that one should already be fixed.

Please keep the questions and feedback coming!

Cheers,
Stephen
