How many fields can the Jira API handle?

Looking for the answer, how many fields /custom fields the Jira API can handle on the cloud instance
using the REST API and JSON

All of them.

There is no posted technical limitation. However, more than 2000 becomes difficult to manage and can incur performance penalties.

@steve.behnke’s answer got me thinking. As he asserts, there is no published limit for company-managed projects. However, for team-managed projects there is a published limit:

You can create up to 50 custom fields in your project.

That limit is the same for UI and API.
