RFC-45 - Upcoming changes to Jira navigation

Hi All,

Thank you for providing your feedback on the proposed navigation changes in this RFC and via interviews. I wanted to summarise the RFC for closure and keep you updated on the next steps regarding navigation design changes in Jira and Jira Service Management Cloud.

What we have heard from you

  • The new navigation design changes mean partners like yourself must make changes to their Apps to ensure they work in the new layout.
Our response - We will be working with you on the proposed designs in EAP, understand your concerns, and incorporate feedback. We aim to provide the required time for you to make these changes. We will keep you in the loop for our EAP and Beta testing phases leading to GA next year (Planned for March 2025).

  • You shared the need for being able to collapse\expand the sidebar so App users have maximum horizontal space.
Our response - We have already incorporated this feedback. The new navigation will have the ability for users to collapse\expand the sidebar. Our initial thinking is as below and we are iterating on this to improve the placements of the collapse\expand controls, based on internal testing\Dogfooding feedback.

Full collapse (1)

  • Less vertical space for Apps due to Jira’s horizontal project navigation
  • Different placements for Jira (horizontal navigation) and Jira Service Management (sidebar navigation) for project Apps which could be an additional effort for partners to maintain and optimise for two different design patterns.
  • More clicks to switch between App menu items that have multiple pages (Ex: Zephyr)

  • Our response- We’re actively working towards implementing the current design changes for EAP to test with a select list of 100 customers (including App users) starting 14th Oct. We want to gather more feedback around these concerns so we can pursue data driven decisions around the design.

  • We mentioned sharing the final designs at the PTTT - Product Tech Talk Time Atlassian Event. What has happened to that plan?

    • Our response - As we’ll be iterating on the design with the feedback from EAP, we’ll share the final designs around Nov 2024 via a PTTT event. Please look out for the upcoming ACE (Atlassian Community Events - Atlassian Developers) event on this topic.
  • Some of you wanted early access to the navigation changes in your test environments.

    • Our response - Please share your Jira/JSM test instance details via the EAP waitlist form. Once the EAP is live on October 14th, we will inform you of your enrolment into the program. Please note that the designs are not final, so you are NOT expected to make any changes to your apps during EAP. This EAP would give you the opportunity to trial the navigation changes, understand the direction we are heading in, and share feedback. A dedicated closed group will be set up in CDAC for gathering feedback from EAP testing.

Thank you for your continued support and valuable feedback. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to email arajah@atlassian.com.
