To add to the topic of frontend calls and monitoring API metrics, it appears to me that frontend calls are not considered in Developer Console’s Monitor API metrics, but are included in Rate Limits, see CDAC thread Forge Monitor API metrics don't consider frontend requests for details. Please correct me if I’m wrong here.
