Hello there,
We have been exploring how external MCP servers integrate with Atlassian Rovo, and we wanted to share our current findings and open a discussion about what’s possible beyond what we’ve achieved so far.
Following Atlassian’s official documentation on connecting external MCP servers ( Add an external MCP server from Atlassian Administration | Atlassian Support ), we successfully connected a custom MCP server for one of our Marketplace apps, Projectrak. The MCP exposes several tools that interact with our app’s API, and Atlassian correctly detects and registers those tools during setup.
From our testing, we’ve confirmed that:
-
MCP tools can be used as skills within agents created in Rovo Studio
-
These agents are able to invoke the MCP and retrieve live data from our app
However, beyond this point, the integration seems limited.
The Atlassian documentation mentions that MCP tools can be used in “Rovo, Studio, and other experiences.” While Studio is clear (custom agents), it is not obvious what “other experiences” refers to in practice.
So far, we have not observed:
-
Any usage of MCP tools by the default Rovo experience
-
MCP data being surfaced in general Rovo Chat interactions
-
Any indication that MCP data is being indexed or incorporated into the Teamwork Graph
-
Automatic insights or suggestions in Rovo based on MCP-connected data
In other words, connecting an MCP does not currently seem to make its data part of Rovo’s core intelligence layer.
Our goal is to understand whether it is (or will be) possible to:
-
Connect external app data (via MCP) to the core of Rovo
-
Make that data available for general Rovo insights, not only through explicitly configured agents
-
Have MCP-backed data contribute to the Teamwork Graph
At the moment, the only clear and reliable pattern we see is using MCP tools inside custom Rovo agents. While useful, this feels like just one part of the potential.
We would love to hear from others who are experimenting with MCP:
-
Have you found any way to make MCP data accessible beyond Rovo Studio agents?
-
Do you know what Atlassian means by “other experiences” in this context?
-
Is there any roadmap or pattern to integrate MCP data into the Teamwork Graph or default Rovo capabilities? We really need to be part of them with our apps data.
Thanks a lot,
Alvaro.
