Customer Portal - only for Service Desk?

Hey much as the title suggests, I’m wondering if I need to convert a Project Management project over to a Service Desk type project to get a customer portal to activate or can you have a customer portal on a NON Service Desk project type?

That said - in order to have a jsd portal - you have to have a jsd project.
