Customers seeing "App update required" but there are no app updates

Hi everyone,

We’ve got an app that’s got over a 1,000 installs. We deploy changes to it every couple weeks… it’s using UI Kit 1. Last week our customers (and our own instance) started seeing this error message:

but we didn’t deploy a change… and when I look as an admin, at the app in our own instance, there’s no update to be installed

In the screenshot above, you can see us rendering the app on a Jira issue panel with the “app update required” message… on the right you can see my view, as an admin, of the app and if I go to admin.atlassian.com, the same app looks like this:

What gives?

(update: can only post 1 image at a time? lame)

Here’s the view inside of admin.atlassian.com:

Maybe the info box is shown because of this: Reminder: Upcoming Sandbox runtime and UI Kit 1 deprecations

yeah, seems likely. Disappointed that Atlassian would show a message to our customers that says that the admin needs to update when there’s no actual update to apply. Confusing all around.

This is a very bad messaging from Atlassian. Directing app users to update app - while update may not exist. Given the complications of updating from UI Kit 1 → 2, please consider hiding the message until February 28.

Hi AaronJohnson,
Thank you for contacting us. We released this deprecation notice for all apps which are still using UI Kit 1 as the deadline for the UI Kit 1 deprecation is in two days on February 28, 2025. After this deadline, UI Kit 1 will no longer be useable. We’re sorry for any confusion with the wording and have taken in developer feedback to update the messaging to provide more details to the end user.
We’ve replaced the original message with :

[App Name] is outdated due to a deprecated platform component.
The app developer needs to update it to a compatible version.
Please ask your admin to check for updates or contact the app developer.

If you have any questions or need any assistance with your upgrade please let me know.
Best regards,
Vicky

Thanks for the reply. On this:

[App Name] is outdated due to a deprecated platform component.

Technically, at the date that you / your team posted this, it was / is not deprecated. I have one email in my inbox alerting us to the fact that this will be deprecated on Feb 28th. You / the team missed the point that the MOST important people to notify on this aren’t MY customers… but instead is us, the people developing the app. You / your team should have ONLY alerted us, multiple times (again, I only see 1 email) that our app that we’ve built for our customers, is out of date… and then after Feb 28th, sure, alert your customers that our app is deprecated.

Appreciate the response, looking forward to a better / tighter relationship in the future,

AJ

Hey AaronJohnson,

Thank you for your response. I understand the feedback you’ve provided and our team will take this into consideration. At the moment, all important changes are announced on our developer changelog: https://developer.atlassian.com/platform/forge/changelog/. The changelog has an RSS feed that you can use to subscribe to changes.

For your upgrade, please contact our developer support team (https://developer.atlassian.com/support) if you need more time to complete the UI Kit upgrade. We want to work with you to improve your upgrade experience.

yep, I get that, I think my emotional reaction was that it’d be way more helpful to proactively reach out via email multiple times before putting a notice in front of our shared customers that they can’t do anything about, but I think you get the point. Appreciate the reply!
