Dark theme EAP in Jira Software and Jira Service Management Data Center

We’re thrilled to introduce early access to dark theme for Jira Software and Jira Service Management Data Center!

All partners can now test their apps with Atlassian Maven Plugin Suite (AMPS) by running the following command with the Atlassian Plugin SDK: atlas-run-standalone --product jira --version 10.0.0-m0004. Or you can download Jira Software Data Center 10.0 and Jira Service Management Data Center 6.0 10.0.0 EAP 03 and test your apps against it to check how dark theme works for them.

Now, dark theme in Jira is still a work in progress and is only partially available. There are a few things that don’t work quite as expected or don’t support dark theme at all. We wanted to give you ample time to adjust your applications to Dark Theme support for a more positive customer experience. Stay tuned and follow our community announcements and the release notes for the latest info about the public release.

The following components don’t support dark theme yet:

  • Dashboards
  • Plans
  • Help us improve Jira dialog
  • Automation for Jira
  • Parts of the administration area
  • Some reports

The following areas have known visual issues:

  • Profile summary area
  • Some parts of the administration area:
    • Troubleshooting and support
    • Administering personal access tokens
    • Terminology
    • Content delivery network
    • Rate limiting
  • Backlog view
  • Create project dialog

Adding dark theme to your apps will enhance the consistency of your users’ experience while interacting with the multiple tools within their work environment, reducing visual distractions, and helping everyone perform more efficiently. Explore more about dark theme’s benefits in our announcement that dark theme is coming to Atlassian Data Center.

How to enable dark theme in your Jira profile

Once you’ve installed the EAP, you can add dark theme to your Jira profile. To do so, enable the com.atlassian.jira.theme.switcher feature flag (How to manage dark features in Jira). Once you’ve done that, select your avatar in the top right corner of the screen. Then, select Theme and Dark.

If you’re already using dark theme across your device, you can select Match system and Jira will automatically adjust to dark theme as well.

Original theme vs. light theme

You’ll notice that the options for the theme also include Original and Light. Although they both represent the usual “white“ user interface and don’t have many visual differences, each has its own technical background.

Original theme uses the same colors as before the conversion. You may want to continue using this theme as they’re waiting for apps to transition to the new design token themes. Additionally, if you decide to switch back from the dark theme, original theme will ease the transition.

Original theme remains a transitional measure. We’ll remove it as soon as we make sure that our partners and customers have no issues adopting dark theme.

Light and dark themes use design tokens – name and value pairings for repeatable design decisions. For example, a color or font style. You can learn more about design tokens in the developer and designer guides that we prepared for this release and provide in the following section.

How to prepare my app for dark theme

Check our dedicated guidelines for developers and designers. After you adjust your app to dark theme, you may want to update the screenshots on the Marketplace to draw customers’ attention and increase their awareness of the new experience.

Hi @RomanKolosovskiy

Will the dark theme also be available for JSM customer portal users?

Cheers

Hey @adam.labus
JSM customer-portal is out of scope since it already supports several colour customisations.

Cheers
