Connect modules will continue working in the forge manifest so long as the equivalent Connect modules still works in Connect. That will be at least until the end of this calendar year when Connect reaches End of Support. After then it’s “use at your own risk” and a Connect module may break without warning and never come back.
While there is no public timeline yet for the retirement of Connect (and it’s associated modules), developers should expect that an unsupported platform is likely to be shut down over time.
Wether you have free or paid apps, my strong recommendation would be to at least make your Connect app adopt Forge while using Forge Remote components to continue using your Connect backend. That would be the easiest “lift and shift” for a Connect app developer.
However, from a Customer perspective, I hope you make your App as Runs on Atlassian as possible since this often gives customers the reassurance they are looking for: that their data only leaves Atlassian where strictly necessary.
