Is there any way to index entity properties without creating connect app?

I am using oauth2.0 3lo for authentication purposes for my app.
I want to use indexing features of entity properties
Is creating a connect app the only way to do it ?
As it kicks in another flow for the user just to index the entity properties.

I believe that the schema has to be defined in the app descriptor. I’m not sure of another way to do it.
