Hi developer community,
Today, we’re announcing a new Confluence feature we’ve started working on. We know this impacts some of you who have built, or may be thinking of apps featuring similar features. We want to give you a clear picture of what’s coming with as much notice as possible, so you can effectively plan your roadmap and keep delivering value beyond this experience.
What we’re building:

A simple new “Number headings” toggle for Pages, Live Docs, and Blogs that prepends simple decimal numbering to all headings on the page (e.g. 1, 1.1, 1.1.1), based on their place in the heading hierarchy.

Numbers update immediately in the editor as headings are added/removed.

Numbers are visible and usable by adjacent features like exports and table of contents macros.
Why we’re building this:
- Native numbered headings is one of the longest-standing, highest-voted customer requests for Confluence Cloud, spanning use cases across technical specs, legal documents, and formal professional documentation. In the customer request, it’s become clear that native numbered headings are a table stakes expectation for the product that needs to be met.
Timeline:
- The feature is targeting an early release in mid-late October 2026.
We know this may be difficult news for partners who have invested deeply in numbered headings experiences for Confluence. We heard your feedback in the last similar feature announcement, and as a result we’ve posted this announcement with more lead time before the feature begins early release.
