Questions regarding legacy icon deprecation and migration timeline

Hi everyone,

I’ve got a couple of questions regarding the deprecation and upcoming removal of the legacy icons:

  1. When you say that legacy icons will be removed on December 1st, 2025, what does this mean in practice for pinned versions? E.g., will apps using pinned versions of icons still build and run, or will they break once the package is removed?

  2. I’m also a bit confused about the communication of this deprecation. As far as I understand, breaking changes are supposed to be announced at least 6 months in advance. However, I couldn’t find any entry in the Atlassian Changelog about this. From what I’ve heard, it might have been mentioned in an RFC, but honestly that seems to be a bad place for such an announcement. Could you clarify where and when the deprecation was officially announced?

Best regards,
Christopher

Hi Christopher,

Thank you for reaching out with your questions, sorry for the late reply.

In regards to apps using pinned versions, yes they will continue working as they are currently. After December 1st, 2025, the legacy icons available via the @atlaskit/icon/glyph entry point will be removed as part of a major package release, having no effect on apps that are bundled with the older versions of the package.

However, when you do decide to upgrade to the latest version of @atlaskit/icon, as we recommend you do, you’ll need to migrate your icon usages. We have some Eslint rules and auto fixers to help with this (please refer to the original message for more information on these).

Regarding the communication of this deprecation, we always appreciate feedback by our makers on the communication process. It is important to us to ensure we are facilitating a smooth transition with our changes.

This work is part of our refresh of Atlassian’s design language, which we shared first with the community in October 2024 (and invited feedback on Iconography specifically via an RFC shortly after). It was officially announced on stage at Team '25, and we updated documentation and shared guidance around then. Here are some links for your reference:

Most importantly at this point, please let us know if there’s any additional support or guidance you need to help you migrate your apps to the new iconography system. If you have any other feedback or concerns please do reach out .
