RFC-59: Upcoming changes to Confluence navigation

Hi all,

Thank you so much for the candid and rich discussion here. As we close the RFC, I wanted to summarize what we’ve heard, what’s changing, and what’s coming next:

What did we hear?

  • Cluttered Sidebar: Concerns about the left sidebar becoming cluttered and pushing important content down, especially on smaller screens.
  • User Experience (UX): Potential complications in user experience, particularly for those on smaller laptop screens. Confusion due to two sections named “Apps.”
  • Impact on Apps: Concerns about users hiding the Apps section.
  • Consistency Across Products: A need for consistent navigation across Atlassian products to avoid user confusion.
  • Customization Clarity: Concerns about the clarity of sidebar customizations being user-specific.
  • Sticky Scrolling and Sidebar Behavior: Suggestions for implementing sticky scrolling for certain sidebar elements to improve navigation.

What did we change?

  • Customization Clarity: We will ensure to make it clear in the UI that sidebar customizations are user-specific and do not affect other users.
  • Full-page apps: We will explore enabling full page apps to expand/collapse the sidebar.
  • Measurement: We will add instrumentation to measure click impact of moving apps entry points.

What Is Coming Next?

  • Ongoing Engagement: We will continue to engage with the community through Product Tech Talks, Community posts, and webinars to provide updates and gather further feedback.
  • Early Access Program: The Early Access Program for the new navigation will begin in Q4 2024, allowing ecosystem partners and interested customers to test the new navigation.
  • Beta and General Availability: The beta phase will start in early-mid Q1 2025, with general availability rollout expected in late Q1 2025 or early Q2 2025.
  • Further Refinements: We will continue to refine the navigation based on ongoing feedback and aim to ensure minimal disruption and enhanced usability for all users.

Thank you for your valuable feedback and for helping us improve the Confluence navigation experience. We look forward to your continued engagement and support throughout each of the upcoming milestones!
