Trigger Jira native Event from Custom UI

I am a beginner and trying to learn build atlassian apps. I have a use case where, lets say i have a button, when it is clicked I want the the control to go to Jira UI. For eg. a button log hours is provided in custom UI issue panel, and on clicking this button i want the worklog popup to open and then jira workflow shall takeover. Is this possible?
