Why Does Jira Cloud Allow Updating a Date Field Not on the Edit Screen?

I tried updating a Date field in Jira Cloud using the REST API.
The field is not on the Edit screen, so I expected a 400 Bad Request response.
However, the update succeeded and returned 204 No Content instead.

Can someone explain what might be causing this behavior?

Update:
I just saw an announcement stating that fields don’t necessarily need to be on the Edit or Create screen to be updated through the API. This seems risky, as it could potentially lead to data inconsistencies if not controlled properly.

Does anyone know whether Atlassian is planning to make changes, introduce a transition period, or address this behavior?
