Renaming next-gen and classic projects in Jira Cloud

Hi there, I’m Bree and I’m a Product Manager working on Jira Cloud. We’d like to let you know about some changes we making to our existing classic and next-gen project type labels.

What is changing?

After our 2018 launch of next-gen in Jira Cloud, we heard consistent feedback from customers that its name, next-gen, was confusing. We heard this frustration and have made updates to correct it. Rolling out in product starting March 29th, we’ll be renaming next-gen projects to team-managed projects and classic projects to company-managed projects. There is no change to the functionality within the project types. To that end:

  • Team-managed projects (formerly next-gen) will continue to be ideal for independent teams who want to control their own working processes and practices in a self-contained space.
  • Company-managed projects (formerly classic projects) are setup and maintained by Jira admins, and will remain the best choice for teams who want to work with other teams across many projects in a standard way.

Why is it changing?

We have carefully chosen labels that are descriptive, but more importantly, connect to our longterm vision for Jira Cloud. Feature gaps exist between the two project types today, but over time, as we continue to invest and innovate in both project types, we envision a world where the only fundamental difference between team-managed and company-managed projects will be how they are administered.

What do I need to do?

This change is in the product UI only, for now. The target is to achieve 100% rollout by mid-April, 2021. We encourage you to update your Marketplace listings, documentation, etc. to reflect the new terminology as you are able.

Right now, we have references to the existing project styles (and some older legacy terminology) in the REST APIs. We intend to add new APIs to reflect the new naming in October of this year. In the coming months we will provide a full schedule for this change, and from that point we will allow at least six months before we deprecate style and simplified.

Please let me know how we can help to ease this transition for you, and if there is any additional information we can provide at this stage. More to come. I look forward to hearing from you.

Thank you,
Bree
