What is the "Legacy Free" status?

The vendor license report now has a new status type of “Legacy Free”, and I can see many customers have active licenses with this status. There was an announcement about this, but the explanation did not make total sense to me.

Can someone please explain this to me? Are they actually active licenses?

I recently saw some of my customers having that licensing tier. I’m not really sure what it means, maybe the folks at Atlassian can shed some light into it.

Atlassian introduced it out of the blue to handle some internal upgrades. IMHO it was a combination of very unfortunate decisions without thinking of vendors

Basically, they are sites that previously installed your app, and unsubscribed, but did not uninstall the app. So they do not actually have a license for your app and any in app license checks will not return active.

They may have installed your apps years ago, and Atlassian generated a license starting recently, with active status, with no end date. I think many vendors may have had automation that triggered emails to these customers assuming they are new.

IMHO:

  • Atlassian should have announced this in advance to give vendors a chance to update automation
  • Atlassian should change the status to inactive and update the dates to actually make sense (with some lead time for vendors to prepare)
  • Change the very confusing name from “LEGACY_FREE” to “UNSUBSCRIBED_INSTALL” or something similar

3% of voters do think “license_type” = “Legacy Free” is the right way to go! :joy:

It’s crazy how these decisions, keep getting made out of the blue just as though someone in Atlassian is trying to hit a quota or KPI. Thanks for the reference, it really helped.
