Get ready for Codegeist

Hey y’all!

:tada: Codegeist is back in a big way for 2020. How big, you ask?

:moneybag: $300K in prizes big :moneybag:

From now until July 13, we’re looking for innovative cloud apps in two tracks:

  • Built with Connect: Create production-ready apps and integrations for Atlassian Cloud tools, including Jira, Confluence and Bitbucket.
  • Built with Forge: Create trusted, scalable apps in minutes while Forge, our new cloud app development platform, takes care of infrastructure and security. Forge is still in beta, so this is an excellent opportunity to take it for a spin and tell us what you think.

Plus, you can use the Trello customization platform to build Trello Power-Ups, too!

What’s Codegeist? :eyes:

Codegeist is a remote hackathon where participants build innovative cloud applications for their favorite Atlassian tools. These apps can be for individuals and for teams, and participants may even want to list their apps on the Atlassian Marketplace. From newbies to experts, everyone is welcome to participate from May 19 (Tuesday) to July 13 (Monday) for a chance to win over $300k in prizes .

Tell me more about those prizes… :moneybag:

Are you one of those people who think, “I never win anything” any time you participate in contests and giveaways? Well, let’s just say, we’re out to change that.

Codegeist provides plenty of opportunities to win big, including:

  • $55,000 grand prize for the best Connect app with second, third, fourth, and fifth place rewards, in addition to five (5) honorable mention prizes
  • $20,000 grand prize for the best Forge app, also with second, third, fourth and fifth place rewards, in addition to five (5) honorable mention prizes
  • $500 each for the top 100 eligible Forge apps
  • $5,000 each for five (5) bonus categories including Best Trello Power-Up and Best App for Remote Working
  • Atlassan Developer swag

See? There are plenty of opportunities to win big, so pick a topic that inspires you and start building.

I understand that you want to help Forge get traction but why limit to Connect for the rest? What is the rationale behind this?

Hi @yvesriel! The contest is open to cloud apps built with Connect and Forge, as well as Trello Power-Ups built with the Power-Up customization platform. Our goal is to provide participants opportunities to build cloud apps for their favorite Atlassian tools without any limitation. Does that clear up your question? If not, will you please clarify what you then mean by limiting to Connect? Thank you so much!

Ok, I think that I might have jumped too fast … it’s connect and not only connect-express. Got it thanks!

What are the selection criterias? Who are the judges? What will they be looking for?

Judge and Criteria are on the Devpost site

Judging criteria are listed on the rules page.

Not trying to be a pain but apart from that items like it must be new, must work, must be free (during judging period - which causes issues later).

There are nothing that’s being looked for?

@sfbehnke – Don’t feel left out! Build a cloud app :sparkles:

I did find
B. Criteria: The Judges will score eligible Submissions using the following equally weighted criteria (the “Judging Criteria”):

(i) Quality of Idea (Includes creativity and originality);

(ii) Implementation of Idea (Includes how well the idea was executed by the developer); and

(iii) Potential Impact (Includes the extent to which the solution can help the most Atlassian users)

But I was hoping there would have been more. Oh well.

Oh and list of the list of judges are at: https://codegeist.devpost.com/

Hey @danielwester! You’re not a pain at all – thanks for asking! Correct, our main requirements are what you listed, along with what’s listed on the rules page. Please let us know if you have any other questions. :sparkles:

The Maker must make the Application available free of charge and without any restriction, for testing, evaluation and use by the Poster, Administrator and judges during the Hackathon and until the Judging Period ends.

Does this mean that you can launch a PvA app and just have the judges use eval license or private listing token?

@shaziya hi! I have my app big update in the March 2020. Can I participate with it?

@remie You got it! We can typically Connect apps with a private token.

@anton2  You can participate with it as long as you update the app during our submission period – we’ll simply ask you how it was updated. :sparkles:

@shaziya Will minor bug fixes update will work? I have no resources to make big updates during the submission period, but I have big plans.

@shaziya wait, do I read that correctly that any (feature) Update to existing Connect apps are eligible for participation?

In the rules it says this:

(iv) New & Existing: Applications must be either newly created by the Maker or, if the Application existed prior to the Hackathon Submission Period, must have been significantly updated after the start of the Hackathon Submission Period.

So with a bugfix or simple minor update I would not expect to win anything.

Minor updates and bug fixes to existing apps will make your app eligible for submission, but apps will have a better chance of scoring well with significant updates and improvements.
